According to a Gouyave fisherman, the local fishing industry needs advancing to a higher level, specifically in areas of better boats and financial management.
Fisherman Desmond Gill tells GBN News that he sees the Gouyave fishing industry as taken a step backward. He said that fishermen need to have better boats for improved production and more revenue. He believes that the fishing industry is not seen as a respectable one, and is therefore left mostly to people who have no business expertise.
He concludes that this is hindering the industry, and the authorities need to play a role in changing things around. He even suggest that fishing should be taught as a subject in schools. This he believes will allow students choosing fishing as a career would be better able to manage their revenue when they join the industry.
